It is only when this pass is cleared of snow the famous Manali-Leh highway is open for vehicular traffic. Due to the elevation and location of this pass, it can snow any time of the year here. And due to this reason, you will find snow at this pass at any time of the year. Also, this pass acts as a natural border between lust greenery of Lahaul and barren landscape of Ladakh.
One of the most beautiful lakes of Lahaul-Spiti the Suraj Taal is situated around 5 kms from Baralacha la towards Manali side. The Bhaga River which is the tributary of Chandrabhaga or Chenab River originates from the Suraj Taal. The Chandra River which is another main tributary of Chandrabhaga also originates from the glacier in this region.
As this whole region is covered with snow there is a lot of streams and small rivulets which flows through the roads. So it should be noted too that one should try to cross this area as early as possible in the day because water level rises in these streams and rivulets due to the melting of snow.
